Only a year after Astrud Gilberto made jazz history—in her recorded debut, no less—as a featured vocalist on Stan Getz and her then-husband João Gilberto's smash hit "The Girl from Ipanema," Verve Records wisely positioned her as an understated vocal force worthy of carrying whole albums. Her second such release was The Shadow of Your Smile, a 1965 favorite which brings together the sounds of bossa nova, jazz, and mid-1960s popular repertoire. Working with Getz/Gilberto producer Creed Taylor and arrangers Don Sebesky, Claus Ogerman, and João Donato, The Shadow of Your Smile offers scintillating takes on great pop tunes of the day (the Oscar-winning title track, first heard in the film The Sandpiper; plus "Fly Me to the Moon" and the Leslie Bricusse-Anthony Newley favorite "Who Can I Turn To?") as well as five bossa nova favorites written or co-written by Brazilian guitarist Luiz Bonfá (including "Manhã de Carnaval" and "The Gentle Rain").
Verve Acoustic Sounds Series titles are mastered from the original analog tapes by Matthew Lutthans, pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings (QRP) and packaged in high-quality tip-on gatefold jackets.
